The nuance is important. I’m reminded of Sinead O’Conner ripping up a picture of the pope on SNL. She was banned and her career effectively tanked. So many people now see the sexual abuse in Catholic Church and know she was ahead of her time. Or Kapernick taking a knee. Getting banned for speaking out against injustice is so different from getting canceled because your actions have harmed someone. And getting blacklisted by people in power is different than the general public saying they will no longer support you. In many cases, it’s the public speaking out against someone that forces those in power to take action. Mob rule can be scary, but for oppressed groups to finally have a platform and a voice is powerful.
